AAC evaluations & therapy in DC & Northern Virginia

Communication belongs to everyone. Choose Kind Therapy offers individualized augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) evaluations and therapy that honor each person’s strengths, preferences and right to be heard.

What is AAC?

AAC includes tools and strategies that support communication: gestures, pictures, communication boards and speech-generating devices. It can be used alongside speech and other forms of expression. Our approach welcomes all communication rather than requiring someone to communicate in one particular way.

Finding a system that fits

An AAC evaluation explores communication goals, interests, current ways of communicating and everyday environments. We consider access needs and sensory and motor preferences, and collaborate with the individual, caregivers and other relevant team members. Together, we can explore tools and trials that fit those priorities.

There is no single system for everyone. Contact us to discuss available assessment options and what an evaluation would include. Device purchases, trials and insurance or funding requirements should be discussed before making a commitment.

Communication in everyday life

Therapy may include modeling language with an AAC system during meaningful activities, expanding access to useful vocabulary and supporting communication partners. We respect the person’s choice to participate, take a break or use another communication method. We do not require imitation as proof that a message has value.

Caregiver collaboration can help make communication tools available during play, routines and community activities. Goals may include expressing preferences, sharing ideas, connecting with others and self-advocacy.
