Understanding scripts and echolalia

Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases heard before, either right away or later. A familiar phrase may help someone share an idea, connect, express a feeling, or enjoy a comforting rhythm. We look at the context and listen to your observations to better understand what a message means to your child.

You may have heard the term gestalt language processing (GLP) used when discussing children who use longer phrases or scripts. Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is one proposed framework for describing this development. Research on GLP and NLA is evolving. We draw on our NLA training alongside current evidence, clinical judgment, and your child’s individual communication profile.

What support can look like

Sessions grow from your child’s interests, relationships, and everyday routines. That might mean building a train track, sharing a favorite book, singing, moving, or simply spending time together.

  • Listening for meaning. We notice when and how your child uses familiar language and respond to their message.

  • Modeling useful language. We offer words and phrases during meaningful interactions, with space for your child to respond in their own way.

  • Supporting autonomy. Goals may include expressing preferences, asking for help or a break, sharing enjoyment, and repairing misunderstandings.

  • Welcoming every communication tool. Speech, scripts, gestures, pictures, and AAC can all be part of the conversation.

Your child’s comfort, sensory preferences, and consent guide the pace. We do not make eye contact, compliance, or masking the goal of therapy.

You know your child. We work together.

Caregiver observations help us understand a phrase’s history, favorite routines, and the moments when communication feels easiest. We share practical ideas you can adapt to your family’s interests and capacity. Goals are individualized and revisited together; we do not require every child to follow the same sequence.

A few common questions

Will therapy try to stop my child’s scripts?

Our focus is understanding and supporting communication. We respect scripts and echolalia while helping your child access useful ways to express their own ideas and needs.

Does my child need a GLP label to get support?

No. We get to know your child’s strengths, support needs, and communication across everyday situations. A label is not a requirement for a conversation or individualized care.

Can we explore AAC too?

Yes. We welcome AAC alongside scripts, speech, and gestures. We can discuss an AAC evaluation and communication supports that fit your child’s life.
